National Health Literacy Webinar

The webinar, funded by NHS England’s Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme, is co-delivered by the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System Health Literacy team and Health Innovation North East North Cumbria.

What is Health Literacy?

Health literacy is about making health information easier to understand, ensuring patients can make informed decisions about their health. This involves using clear, everyday language in both conversations and written materials.

Why is it important?

Many people struggle to understand health information due to its complexity. In the UK, half of adults have difficulty understanding health materials, which affects their ability to manage their health and leads to poorer health outcomes. Low health literacy is linked to:

  • Higher mortality rates
  • Increased long-term conditions
  • More missed appointments
  • Difficulty taking medication correctly
  • Increased worry and frustration

 What will you learn?

  • The basics of health literacy
  • Its impact on patient care
  • Efforts to improve health literacy in North East and North Cumbria
  • Available training and resources
  • How you can contribute

Who should attend?

Anyone in clinical or non-clinical roles who communicates with patients, including those in GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies, mental health services, local authorities, and the voluntary sector.
