Care Quality Commission: Raising awareness about non-diagnostic baby scan services
The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) latest State of Care report was published in October 2022 and directly referenced continued concerns about the safety of some baby scan services.
It also highlighted a concern that confusion can be caused by the fact that some staff working in non-diagnostic baby scan services can use the title of sonographer. This is not a protected title so does not mean that person is medically qualified in any way.
The CQC has been working with the Society of Radiographers to raise awareness among women and pregnant people about the risks associated with these services and ensure they are fully informed before choosing to use an independent baby scan service.
CQC has published an information page with guidance and information for anyone considering using an independent baby scan service. The information page is available in a range of languages and can be printed as well as viewed online.
