Increasing Diversity in the Midwifery Workforce

The Equity and Equality Programme, led by Wendy Olayiwola, National Maternity Lead for Equality, NHS England and Simon Mehigan, National Maternity Improvement Advisor, NHS England, Maternity Safety Support Programme, are running an event to improve diversity in the Midwifery workforce.

Recognising the need to positively promote midwifery as a career choice to underrepresented groups and provide more support for students from these groups as they undertake their midwifery course helping them to overcome the barriers they may face, the goals for the event include:

  • Encouraging and increase the number of applicants from ethnic minority groups and those that identify as male.
  • Empowering pre-registration midwifery students and inspire and support them to complete their journey to become registered midwives.
  • Collecting best practice / case studies to be used to inform future initiatives for the Midwifery workforce.

They aim to celebrate diversity, raising the profile of midwifery as a career choice and inspire future midwives, raise awareness, promote inclusivity. Throughout the event, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from keynote speakers and participate in panel discussions. Breakout sessions will cover lived experience and work being undertaken within higher education institutions to increase diversity amongst the student population.

By the end of the event, attendees will leave with a renewed sense of purpose for promoting midwifery as a career amongst those from ethnic minority groups and those that identify as male which will help increase the diversity amongst our students and ultimately the midwifery workforce.

The programme is particularly interested in attendees that may influence individuals about their career choices which may include representatives from the following groups:

  • Careers advisors / services
  • Education institutes (Colleges, 6th forms, Secondary schools)
  • Community groups
  • Faith groups
